Drug Testing … For Golf????

in Doping in Sports

Watching the news this morning, I saw a story about Tiger Woods calling for drug testing at golf tournaments.

Now, maybe it’s just me, but when I see highlights of golf, it strikes me that many of the players have rarely, if ever, seen the inside of a health club. Some of the younger players look a bit more fit, but none of them even approach looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Granted, there may be a good bit of strength required for those monster drives off the tee, but there’s a whole lot of finesse involved in the game, too.

Steroids aint gonna help in the finesse department. And would the golf world really want the kinds of scandals that have wreaked havoc on other sports? I think not.

The possibility of doping in golf, I suppose, is there. But on the face of it, it seems like a very remote possibility. Assume for a moment that such madness comes to pass. Tiger Woods would be singing a whole different tune if he had a victory in a major — like say the British Open — that was called into question because of a positive result. Especially if it was a false positive. Kind of like Floyd Landis and the Tour de France.
