in Doping in Sports, Floyd Landis, Tour de France

Three weeks from now, on June 26th, Floyd Landis’ new book Positively False will be released. Starting the next day, Landis will begin a book tour that will take him to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California. If you live in any of the areas Landis will be visiting, it will be your chance to meet the 2006 Tour de France champion.

The book, co-written with Loren Mooney of Bicycling Magazine, tells Landis’ story from his childhood growing up in the Mennonite faith, to his beginnings as a mountain bike racer, his switch to road racing, and his rise to the pinnacle of the sport — winning the 2006 Tour. It also addresses the aftermath, dealing with the subsequent charges of doping and Landis’ side of the story.

Another book about the Landis case is also coming out on June 26 — Arnie Baker’s eBook, The Wiki Defense: How the French Lab (LNDD) & US Anti-Doping Agency Botched Floyd’s Test. In Baker’s book, you’ll find the full list of problems Baker found with the initial lab documentation package and subsequent materials that Team Landis received from the French anti-doping lab.

Question..

Any idea on when we’ll hear the trial decision? Do they have a timeline commitment? Anyway to see the progress they’re making in that process?

Any thoughts on how Pound, Prudhomme, etc. will react publicly for either outcome?

Will decision be leaked by LNDD? 😉

AC,

Those are a bunch of good questions. Once the two sides receive the final transcripts of the hearings they have two weeks to file any additional arguments, briefs, etc. I heard somewhere that it would take about two weeks from the end of the hearings until the transcripts would be complete. So that would lead me to believe that they will be getting those transcripts by Friday or so. Which mean that somewhere around the 22nd USADA and Team Landis would have to present their final written arguments to the panel. From there, expect it to take at least a couple of weeks for a decision. That means roughly about the time the Tour starts would be my best guess as to the earliest we might hear.

Regardless of the outcome, you can pretty well expect some outrageous quotable quotes from Dick Pound and Christian Prudhomme. Maybe even Pat McQuaid will get in the act. But first, he needs more lessons in crafting verbal clusterbombs of the Poundian variety.

No doubt, if LNDD hears of the decision, it will be published in L’Equipe within 24 hours. Sooner if Prof. de Ceaurizz gets in touch with their reporter who works the doping beat. 😉

Too bad Floyd isn’t making it to the Boston area. 🙁

Rant,

Any idea on the turn out for the 9th? I’m thinking about driving the ~ 3 hours from the Indianapolis area and trying to figure out when I should get there….

BoilerMaker,

Purdue grad? If so, what year? My father taught there for years. I’d expect that the turnout will be pretty close to capacity, whatever that might be for the Borders in Wheaton. I’m planning on getting there a few hours early, to avoid rush hour traffic and to get a spot.

BSEE ’91. I actually worked for ComEd (now Excelon?) at one of their Nuclear Generating Stations ~20 mins south of Joliet off I55 right out of Purdue. I ended up moving back to Indiana in ’97 and now actually live 10 mins from Purdue…
