The rumors of my dropping off the face of the earth are greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain. I’ve been busy proofing the galleys for Dope, which hasn’t left much free time to do a whole lot of ranting over the last few days.
Well, the proof reading is now over, and the last of the tasks before this puppy goes to print is completing the index. The finish line is in sight. Come next Monday, the index and the corrected pages will be back in the hands of the folks doing all the technical work to turn all those glowing electrons on my laptop’s screen into a real, printed book.
And I’ll be really relaxed.
Meantime, it’s nice to be able to read about bike racing without any stories of positive doping tests. Congrats to Tom Boonen, who rode a great race at Paris-Roubaix over the weekend. And to George Hincapie for still managing a top ten placing despite having to switch out a broken wheel at the same time the winning break went up the road.
Of course, not too many days can go by without some mention of doping in the world of cycling. Seems that Jan Ullrich has managed to escape relatively unscathed from all of the accusations against him over the last 18 months or so — as long as you consider paying a “fine” of something like €250,000 (roughly $350,000) escaping unscathed.
According to CyclingNews.com, Ullrich released the following statement:
“There can be no confession because I have never cheated anyone.” He said that he accepted the settlement in order “to free my family from the public pressure of the matter,” and he further noted, “financial considerations played a role.” But, he emphasized, “the payment is not an admission of guilt. The public attorneys never challenged me to make one.”
Prosecutors in Bonn, Germany, noted that:
[A]ny criminal actions by Ullrich “are considered to be minor, that since results of parallel investigations and other occurrences during this investigation (the confessions of other cyclists), it must be assumed that doping in cycling at the time under investigation was widespread.”
It appears that the prosecutors took into account not only whatever Ullrich might have done, but also the environment he labored in. Quite a novel approach in comparison to the way other agencies might have handled the matter.
Ullrich still faces an investigation by the Swiss Olympic Committee, who issued the German cyclist’s racing license during his last years of competition. But since he’s already retired, what real punishment can they put on him? Not much, I suspect. Having to fork over a large sum of money to settle the case in Germany, on the other hand, does put a crimp in Ullrich’s pocketbook.
Meanwhile, real honest-to-goodness bike racing continues on Wednesday, with a bunch of familiar names taking the start at the 96th Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen. The day job’s been a bit hectic lately, so I may not get to follow it live. But if I get time for a short break, I’ll be heading over to the CyclingNews.com site to check out the latest race action. Think of that. Following a bike race, instead of the latest scandal. What a concept.
Let’s just hope that it can stay this way, and that professional cycling truly has turned a corner. But the cynic in me suspects that we haven’t heard the last of doping scandals in cycling just yet.
Glad to hear you’re still on the Earth.
Interesting that CONI and their court of appeals are not on the same page. Of any country you might figure collusion in judging doping it might be the USA, errrr, Italy.

Goodness, is everyone on vacation or just resting to catch their breath? 🙂
I have a couple questions. I did not pay attention to doping stuff back in 2004 so can someone please summarize for me what the “Oil for Drugs” case is about? How would you compare it to OP? And if DiLuca was involved, why did he only get 3 MONTHS?
And Rant, I’ve been mainlining Diet Pepsi & Diet Coke for years, but I think I need to get me some PEETS & dark chocolate ASAP. 🙂
susie b,
My excuses: –
1. My wife is insisting that I do MY share of housework
2. My wife has come to realize that our entire home needs to be painted.
3. I have a new job and after just eleven days, the company insists that we do 12 hour shifts.
4. My eleven day old job is also insisting that I work 2 Saturdays a month.
5. Rant is using some lame “book editing” excuse for not writing articles that get ne wound up – or my hormone levels have dropped to match Deluca.
6. I find myself having entered the “Twilight Zone Time” – and am actually so fed up with the governing bodies that I am polishing my old Vitus completely ignoring any articles that come up in the media.
7. Well – nobody else is “saying” anything.
8. I am seriously considering “early retirement” but have come to realize this would be detrimental to my standard of living.
9. I am seriously worried that people who have been mainlining diet Coke and Diet Pepsi and now are having a “need” for Peets and dark chocolate.
10. I am depressed by the lowest common denominator issues of the Democrats.
Susie b – that’s my story and I’m sticking with it – I may actually act on “joining” the Sims World for some action…really…I mean it…
Morgan,
Tell you what … you can index the book for me (it’s due on Monday) and I’ll work your job. Commuting to your neck of the woods will be a bear, but I’ve never been there before… 😉
The next post is about Di Luca. I’ll probably pound the keyboard tonight, as a warmup to the real work of indexing this beast.
Susie B,
A day without Peets and dark chocolate is like a day without sunshine. Or something like that. They’re what powers this blog. Among other things.
Wow Morgan, talk about “excuses, excuses”. 🙂 Just joking! Any ONE of those excuses gets you a free hall pass. Hope the new job works out great. Although as someone who has worked almost every Saturday for the past 2 years, I feel your pain. The only thing that makes it bearable is being able to pop in here, TBV & Sara B’s occasionally.
And yes, as soon as I get my hands on some PEETS, I’m expecting I too shall be endowed with SUPER powers like Rant! I’m not kidding, it’s either that or he’s one of identical triplets & he just isn’t telling us.
I’m thinking one of identical triplets…(;-))))
